Using Yiban
FAQ
A few things you may want to know before playing together.
Can I use Yiban if I do not know Go?
Yes. Your child plays on a physical board and you record each move in the app. On your turn, choose a suggestion, place the stone on the real board, then confirm it. You do not need to learn all the terminology first.
Do I need a camera or a special board?
No. Use your own board and stones, and record moves manually in the app. Yiban supports 9×9, 13×13 and 19×19 boards. Select the size that matches your physical board before you start.
Can my child play White?
Yes. After deciding colours, choose Black or White for your child when starting a game. If your child plays White, the parent makes the first move as Black.
Why does the number of suggestions change?
Different positions offer different possibilities. Yiban shows only available choices, numbered consecutively. You can attack, protect your stones or leave an opening for your child. Giving ground does not guarantee a win for the child.
How does a position estimate differ from scoring?
An estimate describes the current position. Scoring counts the result under the rules after checking the board and dead stones. Complex life and death, ko and unfinished fights may need further confirmation. Estimated areas are not a final result.
Do I need an account or internet? Can I restore games on another device?
No account is required. Core analysis and lessons work offline, and games save automatically on the current device. This version has no cloud sync or full game import/export. After deleting the app or losing the device, games cannot be restored from the cloud.
Which languages can I choose?
Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean. In the app, open More at the top right of Home → Language. You can also follow the system language. English is used if none of the supported system languages match.
What if suggestions do not appear or I record a move incorrectly?
Keep the current game saved. Retry a failed analysis or record the parent's actual move. If the real board and app differ, check Board & record in the game menu. For further help, view and export diagnostics from On-device data.
