Position and endgame · Lesson 30
Who is ahead now?
Use Assess position for an estimate of who is ahead. The area map shows regions more likely to belong to Black or White. Frameworks, unsettled groups and areas open to invasion can still change.
Black plays first, so this game gives White 7.5 points of compensation, called komi. Position estimates already include it; do not add it again. Komi stays with White when your child changes color. Other games may use different rules and komi.
An estimated lead is a current assessment, not a win. The opponent may catch up, and your stones may be captured. Even a large estimated margin does not record your child’s resignation. Both players decide whether to continue practicing.
