Start by playing a full game together · Lesson 01

What is a teaching game, and why play one together?

In a teaching game, a more experienced player helps a beginner learn through play. Offer challenges a child can think through, with space to observe, try and choose. Missing a danger today can be the starting point of tomorrow’s learning.

Yiban suggests moves with different intentions. Depending on the position, you may attack, defend, build territory, leave an opening or give more room. Not every position offers all five options, and giving ground does not guarantee your child will win.

A teacher may use handicap stones to change the starting position. An even game starts without handicap stones. These are different ways to arrange a game. New games in this app start on an empty board; it does not automatically place handicap stones.

Let your child think without interruption. Explore move insights together when they ask. You need not finish every lesson first, or quiz your child while playing.
